Hollywood
has ultimately reinvented the production, consumption and distribution of
films. Hollywood has dominated the global market since its massive development
during the First World War. With the massive impact of globalisation, it has
seen the mass distribution of Hollywood films across the world. Of course it
would not take long for other countries to link in to this cultural
phenomenon. Klein discusses how
globalization is affecting film industries in the USA and Asia and feels that
these industries are imitating and ultimately ‘regurgitating’ each other’s
material.
This in turn creates the
denationalization of ‘individual films and film industries on both sides of the
pacific’ (Klein 2004, p.360). Many
Hollywood films have become so infatuated within the martial arts spectacle and
therefore, have really incorporated this phenomenon into Hollywood films. So many recognisable films like the Matrix, Mission Impossible, and The Last Sumarai
all incorporate these activities from Asian cultures and in turn have caused it to become a global phenomenon.
Hollywoodization,
as Klein tries to simply put, is a concept developed in understanding the mass
impact Hollywood has on other film industries. Bollywood is a perfect example
to see how closely these industries are to one another. We have films such as
Pride and Prejudice, reinvented within the frameworks of Asian culture. Klein discuses
that ‘it looked like the overwhelming domination of local markets by Hollywood
films might be a stage rather than the end point of globalisation’ (Klein 2004
p.369).
It has really opened up the doors for local film industries to become
active publics in this cultural phenomenon.
I think its fantastic that the Asian film industry has really created a
name for themselves in recent years. The local industry has really put their
foot down as being strong contributors in the film industry. The movie Swades: We, the people, was a
successful Indian movie and was a box office smash. The Indian hit was filmed in the USA, and it
really shows the comparison between Indian and western cultures
The
western and Asian cultures, in my opinion, have both complimented each other
with their vast cultural distinctions, and have in someway mused together to
create a unique and relatable conception of the success on what constitutes a great
movie.

Your post this week incorporated this week’s reading by Klein into the theme of your blog very well. Using globalisation as an example of how Hollywood has essentially taken over the world linked in with the theme of the entire unit. Bollywood is the best example to use of how Hollywood has influenced other cultures and the increasing profitability of it means it will continue to thrive. Your comparison between western and Asian film cultures drew your post to a nice close and it was clear that you had understood this week’s well.

Although at times your grammar and spelling was not perfect, you sounded intelligent and well researched. I would suggest remembering that you are writing a blog post though and not an essay, you could be a little more entertaining with your words. Having said that, the post was not difficult to read and you managed to develop your concept through a well-rounded discussion and wrap it up neatly in the end. I really liked that you used Bollywood as your Asian representation and I agree with you in saying that denationalization of the film industry can be a positive thing. Well done.

While i think some links and more picture would make the blog more compelling, your blog was easy to read and showed a clear understanding of this week's topic.

ReplyDeleteYour blog post is good. And the concept of Hollywoodization has been well-explained. Undoubtedly, the Asian cultures have influenced the Hollywood movies to a great extent. And we can easily find the element of martial art in western movie, like the Matrix. This is absolutely true. In terms of the Hollywoodization, you raise another good example in the post, Bollywood. Indian movies are getting stronger and we should not neglect them. It is famous for musical. Upon the influence of the Hollywood, the production of Indian movies is getting more professional. Yet, they would still preserve their traditional elements, like music and dance. The hybridization of the two cultures makes the movies even better. So, I strongly agree with you about the last paragraph in which suggests the western and Asian cultures, could be mused together to create a unique and great movie.

ReplyDeleteIve enjoyed reading over your blogs as they are well written. You have a writing style which is engaging and entertaining. Your opinion of the Hollywood film industry is one I share and it is encouraging to see the progression of Bollywood and China in the film industry. The traditions of Bollywood are still prevalent in their films and I suggest they would be skeptical to merge with Asian cultures but it is an idea which I will more deeply investigate.

I agree with your argument that hollywood and the Asian film industries complement each other well. The idea of authenticity and regurgitation is prevalent in many Asian films who use many Western characteristics and features into their films. I think you should pay more attention to your grammar, but over all, your argument of your blog post was well constructed. I would have liked to see more links for the films you used as examples. However, well done on a great blog post for this week.

I liked your comparison and example of Pride and Prejudice, another example that came to mind for me was Slumdog Millionare in a similar sense. Drawing on Bollywood is a great comparison and how because of globalisation and the modern day, it really has all adapted as the years have progressed.

Yes I agree that Hollywood redefined what movie is in advance. It really occurred a great revolution on Hong Kong's movie industry. After the huge success of Bruce Lee, the style of the movie in Hong Kong had a huge change: before it was only people playing some traditional Chinese story as a movie: Everyone knows what will happen so they are extremely boring (IMO) After Chinese learnt the way of movie in Hollywood, that was really a great and huge change over there.
